Histamine Haven FAQs

1. How do I know if I have histamine or mast cell mediated symptoms?

It's important to understand that at Histamine Haven, we cannot diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any health conditions or diagnoses. The information we provide is for wellness advice only.  For confirmation of histamine or mast cell involvement, we strongly encourage you to contact your Primary Health Care Team.  Want to learn more about Histamine and Mast Cell Activation?

2. What role does nutrition play in managing histamine-related symptoms?

Nutrition is a cornerstone in our approach. We use food to create safety in the body. In our book as well as in the Histamine Haven Online Community, we offer customizable dietary guidance to help you make informed choices that may alleviate histamine-related symptoms.

3. Tell me more about the expert contributors to Histamine Haven. How do their backgrounds and experiences enhance the content and advice provided?

Histamine Haven is developed by Tracey Reed and Luka Symons, both Certified Holistic Nutritional Consultants and recipients of the Clinical Excellence Award. They adhere to the scope of practice laid out by the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. Both of them have struggled with histamine and mast cell mediated symptoms and have co-authored the book Histamine Haven: The Essential Guide to Histamine and Mast Cell Activation.

4. How is Histamine Haven different from other approaches?

Our approach is rooted in scientific understanding. We delve into root factors. Our protocol is more than just low histamine: it's also a gut mending protocol, focusing on mast cell stabilizing, and supporting metabolism and clearance of histamine.

5. I'm new to this. Where do I get started?

6. I can't find an ingredient in one of your book recipes / I do not tolerate an ingredient in one of your recipes. Can I substitute the ingredient?

You can. You can replace in most of our recipes except the baked goods. Ensure the ingredient you're swapping in is included on the Histamine Haven Shopping List. Find our replacement list on p.49-51 in the book.

7. Dairy / oats / rice / (fill-in-your-own-ingredient) is not on your Shopping List. Can I still include it?

Our list excludes known mast cell triggers in foods such as grains and dairy. Our list of foods is low lectin, low mold and low in food sensitivities.  We encourage you to stick to our list to best help identify what your unique dietary triggers are, as you move through Stages 2 and 3.

8. Are you vegan / vegetarian friendly?

The science supports the idea that some of the key nutrients needed for histamine clearance are deficient in a vegan or vegetarian diet. Additionally, grains and legumes may trigger histamine release from mast cells, further compounding what's driving your symptoms.  Read an excerpt from our book here on this very topic here for more details.  In our Histamine Haven Online Community, we discuss ways to reduce the potential impact of these plant based diets.

9. Is your protocol gluten and dairy free?

     It sure is!

10. Is your protocol low oxalate / low salicylate / AIP friendly?

Our protocol is entirely customizable! The recipes in our cookbook all have variations to make it easy to fit any dietary approach.

11. I can only tolerate a few foods. Can you help me?

Our program can be customized to get you started with the other pieces of the program that are not related to food.  You are the person who will jump ahead to Stage 2 of the Histamine Haven Protocol. Here, we empower you to understand additional steps you need to take before you can start to reintroduce foods. We discuss how you can identify potential triggers, how you can find a supportive Practitioner and other steps to get you the symptom relief.

12. Do you support clients one on one?

13. Can I work with you if I'm not in Canada?

Yes! We have International Insurance coverage. As consultants, our work is not tied to a jurisdiction or geographical location. This allows us to support clients from all areas of the world.

14. Can Histamine Haven assist me in improving my health?

In our Histamine Haven Online Community, we have compiled a holistic approach that is customizable so that you can explore all the aspects needed to improve your health. It's everything you need in one place. The content of the Online Community is curated to help both individuals navigating their health journey on their own, as well as to support those working with a practitioner. We address the questions left unanswered by your doctor and provide the in-depth explanations and recommendations often overlooked in traditional healthcare settings.

15. What drugs or medications can I take to help with histamine or mast cell symptoms?

As Nutritional Consultants, we are not able to recommend pharmaceuticals. It falls outside our scope.  This doesn't mean that pharmaceuticals aren't a suitable option; it just means that you will have to have this conversation with your Doctor or Pharmacist! If you are struggling with extreme symptoms that can't be managed via other means, please seek out medical advice.

16. I am looking for the 'Resources' page, as mentioned in the book. Where can I find those printables?

We now have them accessible on our home page. Access them here! More available in the free tier of the Histamine Haven Online Community.  You'll also find some printable shopping lists & meal plans on our Book page. Click here for those.
